Propellers are made from three different materials. Plastic props are fitted for smaller models. They are lightweight and very affordable. Plastic props do have some balancing issues. You'll also find that they are noisier than the other types of propellers. Carbon fiber propellers make less noise. Although they are lightweight they do not shake like plastic propellers do. They have a quicker speed than plastic, but they do not have the thrust capability. Wood props are still around, but they are rarely used. They are also lightweight and very affordable, but they are not as quiet as the other two types. They're not as durable as plastic or carbon fiber as well.

Quadcopters, Hexacopters, Octocopters – What Is the Difference?

The difference between Quadcopters, Hexacopters, and Octocopters is the numbers of rotors/propellers they have. Quads have four props, Hexas have six, and Octos have eight. The number of propellers a drone has will determine how much stability and thrust it can provide. The speed and power of the drone increase exponentially with each new propeller. Drones with fewer blades are generally easier to navigate. They're ideal for novice users.

Quadcopters are built with fewer features and components. Quadcopters are smaller in size and ideal for children or beginners who are looking for a simple, enjoyable flight. Because they have so few propellers, there are less moving parts to worry about. Granted, they may not have as much maneuverability. A beginning operator, however, will not be ready to fly a more complex drone. Hexacopters and Octocopters will provide far more options in terms of skill level and maneuverability. It is suggested that you master a smaller unit with fewer propellers before moving onto a more expensive drone that has additional blades.

Quadcopters

The quadcopter has four arms, each with a propeller installed at the ends. Quadcopters can carry onboard cameras that record video and capture images as they move through the air. In a quadcopter two propellers move clockwise while the two propellers move in the opposite direction. Like all other drones, quadcopters can hover for long periods as well as thrust forward quickly.

Pros:

Quadcopters can lift off the ground as quickly as hexacopters and octocopters because there is less weight to lift since the other models are heavier. This means it can get from the ground to several feet in the sky within seconds. Although it would seem that quadcopters do not have as much power as drones with more propellers, they are surprisingly agile and used in commercial and military applications on a professional level. Quads are more affordable and require less maintenance than their 6 and 8 propeller counterparts.

Cons:

Since most quadcopters are either toys or smaller units for beginners they are often considered more 'disposable' as they probably will not last as long as a more advanced model. They carry low-end onboard equipment such as low-grade cameras that have limited range and require more light to operate. If a rotor goes out during operation, it is more likely that they will crash. They also have a more limited flying range and shorter flying times, generally 7-15 minutes.

Hexacopters

Hexacopters have six propellers. Unlike a quadcopter that is designed in an X or H format, the hexacopters are arranged in a circular formation. They carry higher-quality camera equipment and possibly have a few more features as well that allow the navigator to practice more control. Hexacopters land using ski-shaped legs. A larger hexacopter requires more stability when landing which is why ski-shaped legs are built into the craft.

Pros:

Once in the air, the hexacopters will demonstrate more power simply because it has two more props. Its weight may not allow it to accelerate faster than a quadcopter, but it has an overall faster top speed. More propellers allow the craft to carry more weight, although the goal should be for the operator to add as little weight as possible. Six propellers allow the hexacopter to achieve a higher altitude due to its ability to handle higher wind pressure and fight gravity. Since there are six propellers, the hexacopter can afford to lose power to as many as two propellers and still maintain flight and stability in the air.

Cons:

Hexacopters are not as compact as quadcopters because they are generally larger due to the additional propellers. They are more durable than drones with four props, but they also require more maintenance and repairs over time. Hexacopters will require more accessories and possibly greater storage or transport cases. If they fall to the ground, repairs could be necessary for the copter and the video equipment. Hexacopters will also require more complex remote controls. If you've not yet developed the skill level to operate one, it is best that you stick with a quadcopter and master it first.

Octocopters

In the drone industry, octocopters are considered the best of the best drones out there. They are lifted into the air using eight rotors and eight powerful propellers. They have the most flying capability of any other type of drone on the market. They are stable due to the balance and design of the circular rotors. Most octocopters are used to film move-quality video and professional photography. Media companies, as well as contracting companies, real estate agencies, military agencies, farmers, rescue services, and news companies, utilize them. They are the top choice of explorers and archaeologists because of their ability to get into tight spaces. They can go deep into caves as well as high on a mountaintop above the trees.

Pros:

Octocopters combine the best of speed and agility up in the air. They can take off fast and land smoothly. Octocopters are larger than other types of drones. Since it accommodates 8 rotors, it means that the unit has to be sizeable, thus, making it bulky and not very convenient to transport. All rotors are high-powered and will drain the energy out of a battery in a short period. You may find that keeping the drone up in air for extended flights is a challenge without a second or third battery pack added to the unit. As with any other drones, more rotors will mean more maintenance. Almost any octocopters will require additional parts to be purchased. 8-rotor drones do have a much faster speed than hexacopters or quadrocopters, but they don't necessarily have improved acceleration. The weight of the machine can pull the rotors down. If you're looking for something with a little more zip on the takeoff, a smaller drone may be a better solution.

How Do Drones Work?

Drones were built from the same engineering concept as standard helicopters. For hobbyists who like DIY projects, it is suggested that they buy the strongest receiver possible for their drone. This allows the drone to extend beyond a normal distance without crashing to the ground.

There are several things to consider before purchasing a motor for your drone. The first and most important item is the total weight (including onboard equipment) of the drone. If you are building your own drone, it can be difficult to determine the exact weight. One option you may want to choose is to purchase as many other components of the model first to get as close as you can to the estimated weight. Something else to think about is the thrust to weight ratio. For drones with multiple propellers, the total thrust should exceed more than 50% of the total weight of the unit. The idea behind this is so that the motors can work effortlessly to get the craft in the air and excel in a timely manner. Thrust control is important for the drone's agility when turns and reverse movement is important.

They last longer, and they create a stronger thrust than plastic propellers that are usually used for toy drones. A propeller's length is as important as it's makeup. Longer propellers push more air downward and create a greater thrust upward. Long, fiber propellers, however, do add more weight to the drone and put more pressure on the motors. Therefore, it's important to invest in props that are the right size. Another factor in thrust is blade pitch (or angle). Just like the size of the propellers, the pitch has to be right. If it is too angled or not angled enough, it will simply cut through the air instead of pushing it. One last thing to remember is that more blades create greater thrust. They do not necessarily move a heavier drone, however. Much of it depends on propeller to drone weight ratio.

What makes a good transmitter? The answer to that is how many controls you have on your remote and how many propellers you have on the drone. Transmitters are designed to help electronic devices perform multiple functions. Therefore the minimum amount of channels you would need for a quadrocopter is four. The more transmitters you have on your controller the more powerful it is, and the more functionality you can get out of it. Some components to look for in a good transmitter are easy configuration, a backlit screen, three-way switches, programming features, mode options, navigation, and full telemetry. Telemetry is the process of recording and transmitting an instrument's readings. With telemetry, you can recall important information about your drone's performance. This allows you to adjust the drone as needed.

Drones carry a gyro which is used to regulate the rate of rotation around the machine's axis. To accomplish this the machine must be in a rolling position away from a zero point. For instance, let's say the drone is completely still in a level hovering position in the air. The gyros will default to zero. Once the drone takes off and begins to roll, the gyros will measure the degree to which the unit rolls or banks from zero position. So if the drone does a 45-degree bank the gyro will inform the operator via the main controller. Gyros are not completely accurate, but pretty close. This is due to lag time in a moving craft. It may only be off by seconds, so it still gives the user a fairly close estimate of the angle of a drone's roll.

Since a gyro cannot give you a totally accurate report of the position of your drone sensors are added to give you a fuller picture. The more advanced your drone is the more sensors it's likely to carry onboard. High end drones is usually equipped with both vision sensors and ultrasonic proximity sensors. However, sensors range from accelerometers and engine intake flow sensors to magnetic sensors, tilt sensors, inertial measurement units, and current sensors. When all of these sensors work together, they provide the most accurate up-to-date information on what's going on outside and inside your drone while it's up in the air.

Thanks to software, drones have become useful in several industries. For instance, general construction contractors often use software to capture video footage and then create property designs for roofs, building floor plans, landscaping, and other construction projects. The software can be used for mapping out large areas as well as creating 3D maps and models that can be utilized by anyone from surveyors to archaeologists. Software and drone firmware can in many ways expand the amount of control you have over the machine as well as enhance your visual experience on a screen. Some advanced software programs can create entire missions for high-end crafts such as octocopters. It sets the unit on a timer, gives it destination coordinates, tells it to deliver an item, drop it off, and then return to the original destination - all without the direct control of the operator.

Learning how to get a drone in the air is fairly easy, but keeping it in the air while performing more advanced moves is far more challenging. The best approach is to start out small and then perfect each level before moving on to a larger or more advanced model. Battery power can be an issue. You should use battery power conservatively and purchase a backup battery if you want to spend more time flying your drone. Something else to consider is the range. It is a common mistake to test the boundaries of your drone's range just to see how far it will go. The result is often a crash which can destroy the entire machine.  And last, stay away from power lines and tight space until you've improved your flight skills. Professionals sum it up this way: never test your drone's limits.

Flyaways occur when the drone receiver loses contact with the transmitter, thus, sending it on a one-way course away from the operator (and, in many cases, never seen again). Although it's difficult to pinpoint exactly what causes each instance, there are some common factors. Some of them include manufacturer malfunction, failure to check or reset the home point at takeoff, allowing the drone to get too close to the edge of the transmitter range, or flying in an area where there is a high electromagnetic interference. Drones should always receive the same inspection that airplanes or helicopters receive before takeoff. Check your transmitter and receiver and other components before each flight. Make sure they are in good condition. There are some other actions you can take to make sure your craft comes back to you. They provide plenty of information for both beginners and experts. Although laws are set in place to ensure safety and privacy, much of learning how to fly your drone responsibly will come with common sense and sensitivity to privately owned and government owned land. For example, it is vital that you do not fly your machine to close to any building. Doing so could cause suspicions and even further action from property owners. Never fly or hover your drone too close to windows or other openings. You could be accused of illegal activity or trespassing.

There are two main types of drone operation: recreational and commercial. Recreational flying usually includes personal enjoyment or racing your drone. Commercial flying encompasses a wide array of job-related projects that range from video promotion and movie making to contracting and news footage. Many of the laws are designed to provide privacy for property owners as well as safety for your drone. The laws apply to both hobbyists and those using drones on a commercial level. What the laws cover are where you can fly and what you can use your drone for. They also distinguish what is considered the recreational use and business use. It is your responsibility as a drone operator to learn the laws and stay current with them, as they are likely to change on a regular basis. Something else to remember is that local laws may add to state or federal laws. For instance, community-based guidelines may provide drones with places to fly while prohibiting them from flying around certain city parks or other areas. The basic premise is to cover all your bases before launching your drone into the air. This includes flying the craft in neighborhoods and around private property such as farms and fields.

If you want to be certified as an official drone (UAS) pilot, then the FAA offers written and flight courses and tests that you can take to demonstrate proficiency and be licensed and certified. According to the FAA website, you must be at least 16 years old, be in healthy physical and mental condition, and pass all exams to be considered for certification. You must also own a drone model that is approved by the FAA. Existing pilots who have flight experience prior to FAA regulations are also eligible and encouraged to earn their certification for legal purposes. With all the regulations in place for flying drones, it is important to know where NOT to fly your drone as it is where you can fly your drone. Anyone who is operating an unmanned air system needs to know the FAA guidelines where it is safe and where it is not safe to fly a drone. Some of the most common restricted areas are national restricted airspace, zones that are given temporary flight restrictions, public events with large gatherings such as outdoor concerts, sporting events, and outdoor stadiums that are inhabited. You are also not allowed to fly your drones around natural or manmade disasters such as forest fires, volcanoes, hurricanes, tornados, or earthquakes. Doing so can inhibit responders who are trying to save lives during these situations. The only exception to this is if your drone is authorized to do so on a professional level. When it comes to government-protected areas such as national and state parks, government buildings (such as the White House) or national monuments, it is suggested that you contact these agencies before flying your drone around these areas.
