There are three main types of cameras: point and shoot cameras, mirrorless lens cameras, and DSLR cameras. Although they essentially perform the same function, they operate in distinctive ways. A camera sensor collects light. The larger the sensor, the more light it captures. When a sensor receives more light, it captures a greater signal with less digital noise. A larger sensor will have a greater dynamic range than a smaller one. This is because more light is landing on the sensor. The pixel count determines the amount of resolution that is possible to get out of a camera. The higher the pixel count, the more detail the lens will capture without blurriness. There is one potential challenge with this type of setup. A high pixel camera can contain significant amounts of digital noise. In many cases, it may be better to get a log pixel camera that creates high-quality images with less noise. Noise often refers to the amount of light, shadows, or other factors that determine the overall quality of the picture as it's being taken.

They're more compact and lightweight compared to zoom lenses. They also have larger maximum apertures. This gives them the ability to shoot in low light conditions without the possibility of blurring the photo. They can handle the instability that often comes with handheld photo shoots. And last, prime lenses also give the shooter a greater field of depth.

Photographers often carry large amounts of gear when performing a photo shoot. The equipment can become cumbersome during long shoots. Therefore, both the weight and portability of a camera are something that amateur photographers need to take into account. Large cameras may take better photos, but they're also heavy and may require additional accessories. On the other hand, smaller cameras may not give you the quality you're looking for, but they can slide in your pocket and give you the freedom to travel easier.

Should I Buy a Basic or Advanced Camera?

You will likely determine you next camera purchase based on three things: 1) The purpose for which you are buying the camera, and 2) your level of knowledge of camera equipment including accessories, and finally 3) your knowledge and understanding of the art of photography. There is a fourth consideration as well: You will develop your knowledge and skill over time, so the primary concern should be your the reason you buying the camera. Your ability to discern all of the above will play into your final choice for the type of camera you buy.

The primary concern will be the purpose of getting a camera. Why are you buying your camera? Are you going into photography as a profession? Do you want to start a personal hobby and collect photographs of your favorite people, places, and things? Or do you prefer a device that you can carry with you to capture certain moments and events along the way? Some cameras are ideal for parties and social events where multiple people can participate in taking pictures. A modern trend is guests taking photos at a wedding using basic point and shoot or disposable cameras. Your purpose will ultimately determine what the price range you are willing to spend, the complexity of the device, and how much time you'll be spending with it.

Basic Point-And-Shoots

Point-and-shoot cameras provide enjoyment for those who wish to use a camera that has little or no features but just captures candid photos. They're ideal for events. Whether you're at a birthday party, graduation, or wedding, point the camera in the direction you want and push the button. That's it. Basic point-and-shoot cameras do require the camera to have some skill such as holding the camera still and shooting in good light.

Superzoom Point-And-Shoots

Superzoom point-and-shoot cameras are a step up from basic point-and-shoot cameras. They add a few more features. The highlighted feature is that the zoom lens that gives the user a little more range. Due to the added features, Superzoom point-and-shoot cameras will also feature a flash to allow additional light in a given setting since the user is shooting at longer distances. Again, the shooter will have to use some skill to hold the camera steady and shoot in a good light even with the added flash.

Waterproof point-and-shoot cameras are excellent for underwater scenarios. If you're planning to do some deep sea fishing, snorkeling or scuba diving, grab a couple of waterproof point-and-shoot cameras and enjoy the capture the underwater scenery. Like all the cameras mentioned above, waterproof point-and-shoot cameras will often have rolls of film in which each frame will be advanced via a crank. Regardless of your skill level, waterproof point-and-shoot cameras are a bit difficult to use, because of the water and the environment. Advanced point-and-shoot cameras add more features to the superzoom point-and-shoot cameras. For instance, you might have some light and lens settings added to the zoom and flash. Light settings will allow you to be a little more flexible in how you use the camera as well as the environment in which you're shooting your subject(s). One setting on the advanced point-and-shoot cameras might allow your aperture to stay open longer to capture action shots.

A mirrorless interchangeable lens camera is more advanced than standard point-and-shoot cameras because it is digital rather than film-based. Since photography is as much as science as it is an art, the science can get a little muddy when applying it in real world situations. Most professional photographers will tell you that mastering these specifications takes lots of practice. Just like no camera is the same, no photographer is the same either. Each will apply the specifications in their unique way.

A good 'level 1' starting place is to have a solid understanding of megapixels (MP), image stabilization (IS), frames per second (FPS), and ISO rating. What do these terms mean? Why are they part of a makeup of a camera? When and how do you maximize their use? If you can begin to grasp the concept behind these features, it will help launch you to the next level. Let's take a look at each feature.

A pixel is the smallest element in a scene that can be captured by the camera. If you multiply that times a million pixels, then you get a megapixel. Engineers use the term for the number of total pixels in a camera and the number of elements displayed on a digital image. Since significant amounts of pixels make up a picture, it's better to fit as many megapixels into a picture as possible. When editing a digital image, more pixels allow the editing software to have more control over multiple dimensions. A digital device's capabilities govern the number of megapixels. Consequently, cameras that shoot higher megapixels are more expensive. They create more detailed (higher megapixel) digital images than basic cameras.

Image stabilization (IS) is a feature of a camera that is used to reduce the likelihood of taking unstable or 'blurry' photos. Image stabilization is used to counteract the shakiness of a photographers fingers, arms, or hands (or other conditions). It keeps both the lens and the image mirror steady regardless of the movement of the operator's body or surrounding environmental factors such as being on a bus or sitting on a stadium seat when people are jumping up and down. Something to remember about stabilizers is that they are not designed to compensate for movement in front of the lens. If you're taking a photo of a horse race, the stabilizer is not going to keep the animals' movements from being blurry.

Frame rate per second (FPS) is the frequency or rate of which a series of images known as frames are shown in an animated or moving display. Frame rate per second is a common term in all image-capturing devices such as video cameras. The frame rate will determine how fast the camera can capture the moving pictures. The frame frequency is commonly measured in a Hertz (Hz). The higher the hertz is, the higher the rate at which the camera can capture an image. The frame per second combined with the number of megapixels also determines the quality of the picture and how much it can be enlarged and still retain its crisp quality.

ISO is easier understood than applied. ISO is an acronym that stands for International Standards Organization. ISO is a governing agency that sets the industry standards for sensitivity in all cameras. ISO settings determine a camera's sensitivity to light while taking photos in various situations. The lower the ISO number, the less sensitive the camera will be to the light. What ultimately determines the sensitivity is the image sensor. Digital cameras and high-end film cameras contain image sensors. If the camera has a high ISO setting, then it can capture images in areas with lower lighting. While this can be beneficial, a higher ISO setting can make a picture look grainy. The common term for this is photo 'noise.' Mastering the ISO level vs. 'noise' takes some trial and error.

Now that you've covered the building blocks of a camera, it's time to move on to the next level. One thing to note is that it's important to get the basics covered before moving on to more advanced features. The reason for this is that camera features and components building upon one another. Just like a building, if the photographer hasn't established a good foundation with lower-level concepts, mastering higher-level concepts will be difficult. Keep this mind as you work your way up the technology ladder.

Modern digital camera manufacturers continue to tread new ground with amazing features such as video recording (on the camera, not separate), more advanced viewfinders and LCD displays, global positioning systems (GPS), Wi-Fi & near-field connectivity as well as manual mode settings. Keep in mind that almost all of these add-ons do not supplement a photographer's skill or even the quality of the photos that the camera can produce. They do, however, give the user more tools by which to become more versatile and perform efficiently in their work with added convenience.

Video recording allows the user to take high-definition video from the same camera that you are taking pictures from. Most HD video options come with their own set of features that are separate from the camera’s photo features. HD video recording will produce videos of extraordinary quality and offer numerous features such as shutter speed and aperture adjustment, built-in microphones, headphone jacks, quality LCD displays, and tilting. They also come with added ISO sensitivity to either heighten or limit light levels.

At the novice level, most shooters like LCD screens. Once you get into the intermediate to pro level, however, you'll find that most seasoned photographers still prefer the viewfinder. One of the reasons for this is that LCD screens do not accurately portray the focus of an image. Since the user is holding the screen at a distance, they can’t tell if the image is in focus or not. Another common issue with LCD screens that it easily washes out in bright sunlight making it hard to see the subject through the screen. How much storage you require will determine what type of memory card you need. It will also determine how often you need to upgrade from a card with low capacity to a card with higher capacity. Secure Digital cards are a good starting point. They can generally hold anything from 1GB on the low end. From there you can move up to Secure Digital High Capacity cards which will give you up to 32GB. Pro photographers usually require cards with the greatest capacity such as CompactFlash cards and Secure Digital ‘Xtra Capacity cards that can hold as much as 2TB of storage. The higher capacity cards usually required reading devices if your computer is unable to read them internally.

Speed

How fast a card can send and receive files is almost as important as how many files it can hold. While Secure Digital cards can transfer files at an impressive rate, they may not be adequate in a situation when a photographer needs to move files at lightning speed. Two types of cards that work well for professionals are UHS-II standard SDHC/SDXC and C-Fast 2.0 standard cards. UHS-II standard SDHC/SDXC cards were designed to write and transfer massive media files at 250MB/s. They are often utilized when moving raw video and photo files. The C-Fast 2.0 standard cards outperform them, however, by transferring files 450MB/s and a write speed of 350MB/s. C-Fast cards are the faster cards in the industry.

A camera lens, AKA, photographic lens is a secondary device used with a camera that makes images of subjects come to life on film or in a digital image. It is an optical lens, meaning, it is related to perception as is demonstrated in natural light. Just like eye captures images from various levels light, so does a lens. The lens takes in the light and projects it onto the camera optical mirror. The optical mirror produces the image physically (on film) or digitally. All lenses function under this basic premise regardless of the device. Manufacturers build a lens into a camera as part of the entire apparatus or attach it to a camera in front of the mirror or sensor.

Camera lenses can be manipulated to adjust what the camera picks or how the camera functions. The way a camera's aperture responds to a macro lens, for instance, may be quite different to how it responds to a fisheye lens. For beginner photographers, a standard convex lens will be adequate for almost any application in any setting. One of the benefits of having extended lenses is that they can correct any problems that might arise with either the camera itself or operator errors. They can also magnify and enhance images in various ways. The key to using a lens properly is to understand why a company designed it. This way you can optimize how it functions and heighten your creativity.

The focal length of a camera lens is the distance from the lens to the mirror or image sensor when an object is 100% focused. Engineers measure focal length in millimeters. Examples would be a 50 mm lens or 100 mm lens. You can see the focal length on the side of the lens casing. For a zoom lens, the focal length will have a range (example: 18-55 mm). The lens can be as close to the reflecting mirror as 18 mm or as far away as 55 mm. A photographer can observe the range of depth through the viewfinder. Lens manufacturers can play around with focal length by creating different shaped lenses or a combination of lenses. A wide-angle lens captures a greater area. If you combine a wide-angle lens with a zoom, you can adjust the amount of area coming into the mirror or digital sensor.

Aperture is the size of a diagram's opening inside a camera lens. The wider the opening, the more light is allowed to pass through the lens and onto the camera's mirror or sensor. There is a fixed aperture in basic lenses. It opens a certain width every time you push the camera button. Most lenses, however, have adjustable apertures that allow the user to control the amount of light coming through the lens. Manufacturers refer to the adjustment as an f-number or f-stop. Like the focal length numbers, you can find the f-stop numbers on the side of the lens (f/22, f/16, etc.). As you adjust the f-stop setting, you're telling the lens to allow a measurement of light in each time the aperture opens and closes.

In cameras with slow shutter speeds or extended focal lengths like a zoom or telephoto lens, blurriness can be an ongoing challenge. Image Stabilization solves that problem by accounting for a lens' angular movement (pan and tilt). The benefit of image stabilization is that it allows the user to adjust the lens to lower shutter speeds. Lower speeds keep the aperture open longer to allow more light through the lens without blurriness.

A zoom lens allows the focal length of the lens to the camera mirror or digital sensor to be adjusted. When the distance between these two components is adjusted, the object of the lens can be viewed close or far away as the photographer adjusts the lens. A parfocal lens maintains a clear focus as the distance is adjusted. There is no need for the user to fine-tune the adjustment. A varifocal lens, on the other hand, will require some manual correctness on the user's part to get the focus just right. Most zoom lenses are varifocal. Although zoom lenses are quite handy in the field, a photographer needs a working knowledge of other parts of a camera to get the most out of zoom lenses. Ongoing movement of the lens can affect the quality of the image and the performance of the aperture. As the lens zooms outward, you will notice that more adjustment have to be made to keep the quality of the photo from being compromised.

As an alternative to the weaknesses in a zoom lens, many professional photographers turn to prime lenses. A prime lens' main function is that it's able to optimize a fixed focal length. The optical performance is greatly enhanced because the prime lens is designed to capture images at the specified length. The aperture range is limited or fixed and will operate in the same manner every time to maximize the amount of light coming through the lens. Since there is little to no adjustment in the lens, its ability to perform at high levels is uncompromised. Fewer problems are likely to occur. Prime lenses work very well with modern SDLR and sensor-driven digital cameras. A photographer who takes photographs at a specific length can utilize most prime lenses in an effective manner.
